Tokyo Black Beer

We are happy to have a new Japanese import beer on the list – Tokyo Black. It’s brewed by Yo-Ho Brewing in Nagano ( you might remember the Winter Olympics were there not too long ago ). It’s a very dark beer
with flavors of roasted malt and coffee, but also very dry and crisp. Enjoy!

Memorial Day Weekend

We will be closed Saturday 5/28 and Monday 5/30 for Memorial Day Weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thanks and Have a Relaxing Holiday Weekend!

City Pages Best Japanese 2011

Thank You City Pages!

“What comes to mind when you hear “Japanese food”? If an image of sushi pops up in your head, you’re hardly alone. Minnesota has its share of sushi restaurants, but less common are places that serve home-style Japanese cooking and do it well. Thank goodness, then, that we have Tanpopo. The cozy St. Paul spot has been providing bowls of steaming noodles and trays of neatly arranged teishoku for more than 10 years. Often described as a “set-meal,” teishoku consists of a main dish accompanied by rice, miso soup, and another plate or two of nibbles. Order the chicken karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken) teishoku at Tanpopo and you’ll receive a tray full of plates. There’s of course the chicken—chunks of juicy thigh meat lightly battered and fried, dressed with grated daikon and sweet, vinegary soy sauce with a wedge of lemon; one bowl of rice and another of miso soup with tofu and wakame seaweed; and a salad of baby greens with ginger dressing and a darling plate of crunchy pickles. Is anything more comforting than a warm bowl of Japanese noodle soup? Tanpopo’s soba and udon noodles are steeped in an authentic kelp- and bonito-based broth. Homemade desserts like sweet potato crème brûlée and persimmon tart reflect the restaurant’s commitment to healthy, affordable, seasonal, and tasty food.”

We still have a number of openings for Valentine’s Day reservations. We do leave some space available for walk-ins as well, but I would recommend making a reservation. We normally get a bunch of calls last minute and fill up, so don’t delay. It’s best to call after 5:00 pm.

Also, we are going to start a new cooking class series during lunch time. The format of the class is a going to be a cooking demonstration/class along with lunch. More details and a schedule later this week.

Next Sushi Workshop – February 27th

The next Sushi Workshop will on February 27th from 11:00 – 2:00 pm at Tanpopo. Don’t miss it, only 6 spots left.

Here is what pwenzel had to say about the sushi workshop at the Urban Spoon:

I haven’t eaten at Tanpopo, but my wife and I attended a sushi-making workshop here a few years ago. It was a lot fun to meet the chef/owner and get some hands on training in their kitchen. You also get a boat-load of sushi to take home with you. Definitely a great way to learn about and appreciate the craft of sushi-making.
